Appleがリオ五輪に合わせて公開したマヤ・アンジェロウの詩「The Human Family」の意味。

2014年にこの世を去ったアメリカの詩人、マヤ・アンジェロウ。

一昨年の彼女の逝去には多くの人が悲しみに包まれました。

彼女は自叙伝「歌え、翔べない鳥たちよ」で最もよく知られており、マーティン・ルーサー・キングと共に公民権運動に参加した人物として、今なお世界中から尊敬を集めています。

Appleがリオ五輪に合わせてリリースしたiPhoneの新しいCMでは、iPhoneで撮影した写真や動画がマヤ・アンジェロウの朗読と共に紹介されています。

「The Human Family」という詩は、人間の多様性の素晴らしさを謳ったものです。

最後はこう締めくくられています。

“We are more alike, my friends, than we are unalike.”

みなさん、私たちは違っているところよりも、似ているところのほうがたくさんあるのですよ。

最後に3度繰り返し読まれるこの文章は、たとえ人種、肌の色、目の色、宗教が違っていても、ひとりひとりが違う人間であることは当たり前。それよりも似ているところを見つけてみましょう、という想いが込められています。いまこの時代にも強く心に響く詩だと思います。
